Uber has announced it is launching a pilot program for a second-hand electric vehicle market.

Launched in partnership with Car Empire – a used car dealership specialising in imports – the rideshare giant said its Uber and Uber Eats drivers working in Brisbane and Gold Coast will have the opportunity to purchase or finance a second-hand Nissan Leaf through the program.

Uber said its workers will have the option to finance the used EV “for as little as $124 per week” and is “inclusive” of a three-year warranty and roadside assistance, but did not specify outright purchase pricing.

“For the past several years, we’ve been investing in a range of programs to lower the costs for drivers to transition to electric vehicles,” Emma Foley, Managing Director of Uber Australia and New Zealand, said in a media statement.

“We’ve always believed a thriving second-hand EV marketplace would be a key catalyst to accelerate adoption across our platform,” Foley added.

The second-hand Nissan Leafs on offer are imported from Japan by Car Empire and vary from Australian-delivered models.

“Car Empire, through strategic partnerships, has the unique ability to access a substantial volume of quality used EVs in Japan and import them in Australia," the Director of Car Empire, David Cosgrove, said in a media statement.

This not only provides consumers with a broader selection but also contributes to reducing emissions across the country,” Cosgrove added.

This news comes as the rideshare giant previously announced a global partnership with Chinese EV manufacturer BYD – with Uber planning to add 100,000 BYD models to its global fleet.
